Swim to Survive & Volunteers

We had a great first day at Swim to survive! As a warm up, the students played a short game of octopus in the shallow end. Students then completed a couple short swimming assessments. By doing this, the lifeguards were able to level their swimming abilities for proper instruction in the upcoming weeks. The instructors were wonderful and very organized! They ensured the entire time that each child felt safe while swimming and were all having fun. Today's lesson included: - small groups of four swimming the length of the deep end (there and back, with a noodle if needed/preferred by the student) - rolling off of a floating foam platform into the water. (This helps teach students to not panic when they are disoriented under water if they fall in) - in pairs with a lifeguard, students practiced treading water in the deep end for 60 seconds, keeping their whole head above water the entire time All the kids had a blast this morning and they all swam really hard! Needless to say

Our Lenten Project

As you know Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday fell on the same day this year. This week we learned about the history of St. Valentine and discussed the connection between Valentine's Day and the season of Lent. Students shared lots of good ideas about how St. Valentine spread love by marrying soldiers in secret. They also connected it to how Jesus wants us to open our hearts and spread love to others, especially during Lent. This conversation continued when the Gr.3's heard Ryan Hreljac speak on Friday. Ryan is the founder of Ryan's Well, a foundation that raises money to build wells in places where clean water isn't easily accessible, if at all. In sharing his story, Ryan explained how he has been working to make a difference in the world since the age of six and that no matter how young or old you are, you have the power to change lives. The kids and myself were all very moved by Ryan and his dedication to bring clean water to those in need. So, in connection

This Week: Olympics

What an exciting week ahead of us! In honour of the Olympics, our class is working together with Mrs. Sloan's class to do a number of cross curricular activities that all tie into the Winter Olympics. Check out our co-created bulletin board outside our classroom: Our board includes a bar graph of the the current medal count of the top eight countries predicted to win the most medals. As a class, each morning we will look up the current medal standings and then students will update the bar graph. Check it out here!  Current Medal Standings Our bulletin board also includes "Fun Fact of the Day" and "Star of the Day" which highlights one Canadian athlete and one international athlete. Mrs. Sloan and myself created exemplars for today and tomorrow while the students work in pairs to research an athlete they chose. Once completed, students will get to see their own work up in the bulletin for "Star of the Day" over the course of the next two w
