Our Lenten Project

As you know Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday fell on the same day this year. This week we learned about the history of St. Valentine and discussed the connection between Valentine's Day and the season of Lent. Students shared lots of good ideas about how St. Valentine spread love by marrying soldiers in secret. They also connected it to how Jesus wants us to open our hearts and spread love to others, especially during Lent.

This conversation continued when the Gr.3's heard Ryan Hreljac speak on Friday. Ryan is the founder of Ryan's Well, a foundation that raises money to build wells in places where clean water isn't easily accessible, if at all. In sharing his story, Ryan explained how he has been working to make a difference in the world since the age of six and that no matter how young or old you are, you have the power to change lives. The kids and myself were all very moved by Ryan and his dedication to bring clean water to those in need.

So, in connection to St. Valentine's Day, and the Lenten season, the Gr.3's are committing themselves to a Lenten project in which all proceeds go to Ryan's Well Foundation. For our project, I will provide the students with sugar free gum ($1.00 /piece) for one block in the day. We are all excited to see how much we can raise!

I am sending home a note today with further details and a permission form permitting your child to have a piece of gum on Friday's.
